Kingpin Student Weekly, March 2004 Did you Know? Silly Fools best-selling album is their 2001 offering, Mint. In the world of Thai rock music, there is hardly a bigger band than Silly Fools. The guys have been on a roll ever since their debut album, IQ 180, rocked the Thai music scene back in 1998. Six years and five hit albums later, Silly Fools have cemented themselves near the top of the industry with their playful blend of fun lyrics and pounding chords. With a loyal following across the country, a new album with two top ten singles and an ongoing concert tour, it might be fair to say that the four guys from Silly Fools truly are king sized. Taking a break from his hectic touring schedule, the bands 28-year-old lead singer Natapol Puthapawana (Toe) took some time to talk to Student Weekly about the bands new album, King Sized, Silly Fools changing sound and what it takes to be a big-time rock star. Student Weekly: Lets start off with the album title. What was the concept behind King Size? Toe: The title, King Size, was decided on after we finished the album. We actually have never had any set concept while we were working on an album, because that would limit or ideas and creativity. We ended up naming it King Size because we felt that the sound is immense. Student Weekly: Youve finally made it to your fifth album. Is it any easier to make an album now, or is it still difficult? Toe: Making it better than our previous albums was the most difficult thing. It is always really hard to try to top what youve done before. Student Weekly: The songs on King Size sound very similar to Juicy, your fourth album. Is this just a continuation of the last album? Whats new this time around? Toe: In fact, King Size is different from Juicy. If you compare each song on each album you will see a difference. But, every one of our songs does have our bands unique style. You cant get this style from other bands. Youve got to have your own style or else youll just be a band with one hit album and then... gone. Student Weekly: OK, well this album does sound a bit softer than the past albums. Have you adjusted your sound to be more mainstream? Toe: Yes, we have adjusted our album to reach the masses. We wanted more people to listen to and accept our work. But to become mainstream doesnt mean less quality. Our early albums were a bit extreme. At our age at the time we could be extreme. We wanted to show off our music skills, but a lot of listeners didnt get it. This time around we have made things a bit softer so we can express our ideas and communicate with listeners. Student Weekly: How would you describe King Size in only a few words? Toe: Extremely fun. Student Weekly: The first track is called Laew Tae Pae (Up to Pae). Who is Pae? Toe: Pae is the nickname that the guys in Silly Fools gave to our guitarist Ton. The song is about a person who is really straightforward and honest, just like Ton. Student Weekly: OK, now weve got to ask about the album cover. You all look like youve got the bodies of professional wrestlers. So does anybody in Silly Fools actually have a body like that? Toe: No one. Actually, we dont have any muscles we only have potbellies. Student Weekly: You guys are really busy touring with Sek Loso right now. What do you prefer, concerts or studio time? Toe: We spent six months in a studio, so the rest of our time well spend touring. Generally, both are fun, but I feel more pressure being in the studio. But if we have too many concerts, that can be uncomfortable too. I dont know why, though. Student Weekly: One last question: Do you have any advice for the people dreaming of becoming professional musicians? Toe: The first step is that you must have your own style. This isnt easy, but you arent going to be a professional if you imitate Silly Fools or any other bands. But to become famous, you also have to have good fortune. If you have any comments about Silly Fools or their songs, then please post them below:
