Story by Nuttaya Muneerat
Did you Know ? When he
was 14, Tai and his friends formed a band named Petchalawan.
In an industry where much
of the music sounds the same, Tanawut Keawperk (Tai) has always dared
to be different. While many artists are copying their favourite Western
stars, Tai has released his new album, Pen Tai (To Be Tai), and created
something uniquely Thai.
“It is Thai and rock music
mixed together, but it doesn’t sound like any Western music you’ve
heard,” Tai said. “I don’t want to copy anyone. Copying people won’t
win me any admiration, not from fans and especially not from foreign
artists. I just wanted to show my own style.”
And that is how Tai is.
Ever since he hit the music scene in 1998 with his album Tai Tanuwat,
Tai has been doing things a bit different. His song “Pratuang,” off
that same album, introduced the slang word pratuang (a gay person)
into common usage. As the song was being played on the radio over
and over again, people everywhere started using the word.
And Tai wasn’t finished
creating new words. When his second album Tai Jai Pen Nueng was getting
airplay, many Thais could be heard telling their loved ones “Chan
To Ter (I Table You).” It may sound stupid now, but back then it was
a cool way to avoid saying “I love you.”
Just be yourself
There are no fun new words this time, but with his unique style of
Thai rock, Tai will still be setting trends.
Tai is at his amusing best
on the track “Pid Pan (Wrong Plan).” The song — about a guy’s plans
to hit on a woman that get messed up — has fun lyrics and an interesting
concept.
The slow song “Kon Tang
Kon” is one of Tai’s favourites. He really likes the melody, which
is played with string instruments.
But one of the most meaningful
songs for Tai is the track “Kon Jai Rai (Mean Woman).” Tai wrote the
lyrics nine years ago and it is the first song he ever wrote. “I wrote
this song after I saw Sake in Loso’s MV,” Tai recalled. “That was
the first time that I realised that a normal looking guy could be
a singer too. I was inspired and wrote this song hoping that I would
someday be lucky too.”
Whether it has been luck
or not, Tai has become one of the trendsetters of Thai music and has
shown that it is possible to make it to the top by just being yourself.

My colleagues at workin Singapore laughed when I translated "chan toa ter" to "I'm your table" :) Two questions though, #1 How do I find out how to catch him live?! Does he ever play concerts or gigs?, and #2 Where can we get his first album on CD? I haven't seen it anywhere (in Bangkok) for the last couple of years. My tape is wearing out.
Don't forget to check out the recent CDs of Thai singing classic Thai songs.
